MAKING HISTORY: Kheris Rogers

AN 11-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl once bullied about her dark skin has made history as one of the youngest designers at New York Fashion Week.

Kheris Rodgers showcased her Flexin’ In My Complexion range, a line of empowering casual wear, in the Museum of the City of New York yesterday (Sept 10).

“I just made history as #NYFW youngest fashion designer EVER,” Kheris wrote on Instagram. “I am only 11 years old and made it to the runway while encouraging people to love their skin. Thank you all for your support! Keep Flexin’ In Your Complexion.”

Kheris was constantly teased about her skin tone at school.

She told BuzzFeed News that during an exercise years ago in grade school her teacher asked students to draw themselves, then handed her a black crayon.

“I’m not that dark… I’m brown,” she replied.

Her mother eventually transferred her to a new school in hope it would subside, but the bullying continued.

The schoolgirl’s 22-year-old sister, Taylor, took matters into her own hands and in late March, helped dress and style her little sister for a Wiz-inspired fashion show.

She shared them on Twitter, writing: “My sister is only 10, but already royalty,” she captioned them, adding a #FlexinInHerComplexion hashtag.
By April, the tweet and photos of Kheris went viral. It now has nearly 30,000 retweets.

When Taylor showed Kheris the flood of comments calling her “beautiful” and her skin “gorgeous,” Kheris’s face lit up.
