SOUTH LONDON rapper Stormzy is the bookies favourite to take home the prestigious Mercury Prize Award this year, according to the Independent
The 24-year-old star, who released his critically-acclaimed debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer earlier this year, will go head to head with friend and collaborator Ed Sheeran, fellow UK wordsmith J Hus and singer Sampha.
After the news of his nomination was revealed, Stormzy, real name Michael Omari, took to Twitter to express his gratitude.
“I put my heart, my soul and my absolute everything into making this album,” he said. “”Over the moon right now. Giving God the glory.”
He is closely followed by Sampha, who has previously collaborated with Frank Ocean, Kanye West, and SBTRKT.
Last year, Skepta won the prestigious award with the album Konnichiwa, becoming the first Grime artist to win since Dizzie Rascal in 2003 with Boy In Da Corner.
The winner — who takes home £25,000 — will be announced on the 14 September during a broadcast ceremony that will see many of the nominees perform. See the full list of nominated albums below.
