BLACK-ISH STAR Yara Shahidi will officially head to Harvard University at the start of the new term, she revealed on social media today.
The 18-year-old actress, who was accepted into every college and university she applied to, posted a picture to Instagram proudly sporting a Harvard University sweatshirt.
It came with a caption that included a moving quote from a black literary legend: “The paradox of education is precisely this ― that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated. ~ James Baldwin #CrimsonPride.”
Former First Lady Michelle Obama, who attended the Ivy League institution and graduated from Harvard Law School, wrote four college recommendation letters for Yara, including for her application to Harvard.
Michelle Obama’s daughter Malia will be also attending this year.
Similar to Malia, Yara, who previously said she plans to double major in sociology and African American studies, said she is considering taking a year-long break before beginning at Harvard to work and better prepare for her future.
“I’ve been working more than half of my life and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities,” she told People, “so to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path.”
