BEYONCÉ AND Donald Glover have been announced as recipients of prestigious Peabody Awards.
The singer was honoured for her celebrated visual album, Lemonade, while Donald Glover was honoured for his groundbreaking FX show about his hometown hip-hop scene, Atlanta.
Both were among the 60 previously announced finalists for the prize focused on the most compelling/empowering stories told using electronic media in 2016.
In honoring Lemonade, the Peabody judges wrote that the visual spectacle that aired on HBO: “Draws from the prolific literary, musical, cinematic, and aesthetic sensibilities of black cultural producers to create a rich tapestry of poetic innovation. The audacity of its reach and fierceness of its vision challenges our cultural imagination, while crafting a stunning and sublime masterpiece about the lives of women of color and the bonds of friendship seldom seen or heard in American popular culture.”
They described Donald Glover’s Atlanta as an “enchanting series” which follows the “struggles of two young black men trying to make it in Atlanta’s rap scene blends vibrant character study and rich socio-political commentary in delivering a detailed and textured exploration of a Southern city”.
