US ACTRESS Amber Riley won the Best Actress Olivier Award for her role in West End’s Dreamgirls at the annual ceremony last night (April 9).
The former Glee star plays Effie Smith – the role that won Jennifer Hudson an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her portrayal in the 2006 musical drama – in the London stage adaptation of the hit musical.
Taking to social media after the ceremony, the 31-year-old wrote: “I am all cried out. My eyes are almost swollen shut from all the happy tears I cried today lol thank you so much for all the congrats!
“Honestly this has been a very unexpected night. I am so filled with gratitude I could burst. Thanks for coming to see Dreamgirls and if you haven’t seen it yet, everyone in this show is phenomenal, please come! We would love to see you there! Blessings.”
Amber co-stars alongside Liisi LaFontaine who plays Deena Jones and Asmeret Ghebremichael as Lorrell Robinson.
Dreamgirls is also up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Adam J Bernard, Outstanding Achievement in Music, Best Costume Design and Best New Musical.
