MARQUES BROWNLEEE, also known by his username, MKBHD, is a YouTube sensation who makes over $3 million a year from his reviews online.
Boasting over four million subscribers on the video sharing platform, he tests everything from cameras and headphones to Google Glass and the latest Tesla.
Even former Google VP Vic Gundotra called him “the best technology reviewer on the planet right now”.
The New Jersey native started making review videos in 2008 and developed his affable persona and slick filming style.
“If I’m going to give someone advice on what to buy, you want a personality to back it up rather than some robot telling you X is better than Y,” he says.
Today, his channel, which boasts a total of 574 million views, generates enough money from ads “to pay for itself and to make it worth my time”.
And his achievements are all the more significant as he balanced his successful one-man production with his senior year of college.
Marques’ dad works in technology – information systems and programming, specifically – but the young man’s interests are more centered on consumer electronics, starting with computers and some of the old camcorders his parents had around.
“It was kind of a background hobby; I didn’t have a reason to tell anyone when I first started making the videos,” he said.
When asked about his plans after college, Brownlee told Business Insider he would “definitely keep making videos as long as they’re fun to make.”
“But having a degree,” he said, “I went so far with school, so I might as well just finish. Getting my degree is something I’ll be really happy about. I’ll wing it from there.”
