FRENCH ACTRESS Karidja Touré will play 19th-century black equestrian Selika Lazevski in a film depicting her life.
Karidja, who starred in 2015 coming-of-age drama, Girlhood, takes the lead in The Adventures of Selika, short film based on Selika, whom the film’s writer Sybil H. Mair reimagines as an African princess forced to leave her home and find her place in the world.
The movie comes three years after the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Girlhood, which earned Karidja a nomination for a Cesar Award ― comparable to an Academy Award ― for Most Promising Actress.
In Girlhood, Karidja plays a lost 16-year-old who befriends a rebellious group of girls to gain a sense of identity.
It is of stark contrast to her role in The Adventures of Selika, which is slated to premiere on April 16
