HE WAS named GQ’s Best Dressed Man in 2012, and fans have watched his style continue evolve, innovate and inspire since then.
Therefore, when award-winning British rapper Tinie Tempah announced he was to create a high fashion label, it seemed like the next step in his fashion evolution.
On Saturday (Jan 7), he revealed the fruits of all those hours watching shows, transitioning from front row to backstage as the designer of a new label named What We Wear.
From high-shine tracksuit tops to layered-effect sweatshirts and light, relaxed-leg trousers, the collection has that kind of sporty, sleek vibe that Tinie has made his signature.
“To be honest with you I see myself as a creative,” the 28-year-old, said. “When you are a musician you become defined by what you do, and being a rapper as well you become defined. I’ve hated the idea of being defined as one thing.”
This first collection, he added, was an exercise in “seeing if I could do it”.
Tinie has been heavily involved in the industry, having started his own clothing label under his umbrella business name Disturbing London almost 10 years ago. He is also an ambassador for London Collections: Men, which takes place next month.
He said his time attending shows, befriending designers, and seeking their advice had been instrumental in giving him the confidence to give it a go.
“Once I got a little bit of know-how and expertise I thought I would see what I could do. I thought let me make my own contribution. I don’t want people to think I’m stylish just for wearing other people’s clothes.”
