DONALD GLOVER and Issa Rae have definitely made their mark (and won an array of fans) in 2016.
Donald Glover, 33, has successfully managed to balance a music career (as Childish Gambino) with his acclaimed FX series Atlanta while 31-year-old Issa Rae’s HBO series Insecure has been an instant hit and recently earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
The pair cover this week’s Hollywood Reporter, which gives a platform to “creative talents flouting the conventions of formula”.
On reception to her work, Issa Rae told the publication: “No matter what it is, I don’t want everyone to be on board or everyone to exclaim that it’s the best thing they’ve ever seen. The goal is to make people feel and to make people talk about it. But there’s such a hype culture right now.”
Having emerged from a culture of posting her own stuff online and then people reacting to it and then eventually, now, mainstream with HBO, she said: “I feel like I did earn my way up, and this is just the new medium.”
Danny added: “The way we live now is mostly editing and knowing your brand. I know a lot of jazz musicians, and it’s cool when you can hear them mess up and hear them turn it into something cool.”
