THE five-member US women’s gymnastics team marched straight to a repeat Olympic gold in the team event, dominating their nearest rivals in Rio and confirming their status as a gymnastics powerhouse.
The five gymnasts – Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian – showed their dominance in every category and walked away with the gold, winning by more than eight points.
Simone, 19, gave a stellar performance on the floor, scoring a 15.800, which was the best of the competition.
Speaking at a press conference after the win, Biles said the team was “so successful because we believe in ourselves. Our team believes in each other.”
“It hasn’t been easy but we have done everything we could have done to get where we are,” she said.
The Americans’ final score was 184.897 points giving them a huge winning margin over Russia on 176.688.
