ALICIA KEYS one upped the “#nomakeupselfie” by arriving to the BET Awards looking like she’d just enjoyed a deluxe, deep cleansing facial.
The singer – minus cosmetic help – attended the annual awards show, which celebrates black and minority talent in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment, and was applauded for her “bare-faced look” by red carpet commentators.
Alicia is an advocate for the make-up free movement, an initiative she explained in an essay for Lena Dunham’s Lennypublication.
“Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me,” she said.
Keys hopes her new look, which she credits to meditation for allowing her to focus on “clarity and a deeper knowing of myself” spurs a “revolution”.
