CONGRATULATIONS ARE in order for south London rapper Stormzy, who picked up the Breakthrough gong at tonight’s (June 5) South Bank Sky Arts Awards.
The annual ceremony celebrates emerging artists in the UK – and the night belonged to the south London wordsmith.
“Honoured to have won the prestigious @thetimes South Bank Breakthrough Award! Thank you to those that voted,” the 22-year-old tweeted.
The nominees for the Times Breakthrough Award cover the arts spectrum from literature and dance to film and television.
Singer Benjamin Clementine picked up the pop music award for his debut album At Least for Now, while Michaela Coel’s E4 sitcom Chewing Gum received a nod in the comedy category.
“This means so much to me to be alongside all these amazing people. I don’t know how I pulled it off, to be honest,” Stormzy said as he collected his award.
He beat beat stars including Chewing Gum actress Michaela Coel, comedian Romesh Ranganathan, model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn and Kinky Boots musical star Matt Henry in the Breakthrough category.
