BOY BETTER Know (BBK) founder Skepta has revealed that he and Canadian rapper Drake are working alongside actor Ashley Walters on a new season of gritty drama Top Boy.
The north London rapper, real name Joseph Adenuga, revealed the news during a in-depth interview with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe yesterday (April 18) ahead of the release of his highly-anticipated album, Konichiwa.
Skepta confirmed the new series of the show would be returning with himself and Drake in the mix.
“We wanna [want to] do bigger things than just our crew. Even with the Top Boyseries and Ashley Walters,” he said. “Them two have been working closely and I’ve been making sure on the creative direction wave with Drake about the series just making greatness with it. The whole style whats going on in London, the sound. Everything about it is real, it’s an actual thing that actually happened and it deserves to be on the turner.”
The 33-year-old hailed the show for putting Britain’s street culture in the global eye.
“It’s not just my music. Not everybody listens to grime now because of Skepta,” he said. “They like how we speak, they like the slang, how we dress, the music, it’s everything. Stuff like Top Boy, that series was an addition to what I did.”
Skepta confirmed that the reboot would be set in London contrary to reports that suggested that a Drake-backed project would be set in Chicago.
And the good news keeps coming, today (April 19), the BBK figurehead was announced as the frontrunner for a prestigious Ivor Novello Award in the Best Contemporary Song for Shutdown.
The award ceremony is scheduled for May 19 at the Grosvenor House in London.
