SONGWRITER TO the stars Carla Marie Williams has launched a new initiative aimed at championing women in the creative industries by pairing them with like-minded professionals.

Girls I Rate (GIR) seeks to celebrate and highlight the successes of diverse women in the creative industries and encourage equal opportunity for women in the industry, in hopes of building an industry-wide network, with engagement across all ages and ethnicities.

The new movement, supported by the MOBO Organisation, will launch with an intimate gala dinner at The Yacht London on International Women’s Day (March 8), featuring nominees for membership.

Carla, who has written hits for Kylie, Girls Aloud and Beyoncè, has chosen the first round of GIR nominations, which feature an array of female industry leaders whom she respects or ‘rates’.

They include fellow singer/songwriter, TV presenter, actress and model Jamelia, artists Ms Dynamite, Stooshe and VV Brown and MOBO founder Kanya King MBE.

These new GIR members will then nominate their own shortlists of women in the industry to continue the process.

Attendees will also make a minimum contribution to the non-profit social enterprise.

The west London-born talent said of her new venture: “I’m proud and delighted to launch this rapidly rising female movement, everything so far has been word of mouth from women that genuinely support me and GIR. To bring together all the women I ‘rate’ within my industry in one room will be such a gratifying experience.

“Girls I Rate is not only about celebration of success, it is also about creating future platforms to empower, mentor and support the next generation of diverse GIR girls and young women coming through across the industry.”

GIR will also offer panel discussions, workshops, mentoring and work placements.
