BRITISH ACTRESS Gugu Mbatha-Raw has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for her role in Concussion alongside Hollywood actor Will Smith.
The 32-year-old, from Witney in Oxfordshire, plays Prema Mutiso, the wife of Dr. Bennet (Smith) in the film about a forensic pathologist who fought against efforts by National Football League to suppress his research on the brain damage suffered by professional football players.
It is Gugu’s third NAACP nomination. In 2011, she was nominated for Outstanding Actress in Drama for her role in Undercovers and again last year for performance in Amma Asante’s Belle.
The actress first gained prominence in a recurring role in Doctor Who, playing companion Martha Jones’s sister, Tish Jones.
She earned critical acclaim for her performances in the period drama Belle and the romantic drama Beyond the Lights, directed by Gina Prince Bythewood, receiving numerous accolade nominations from critics worldwide.
An NAACP Image Award is an accolade presented by the American National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to honor outstanding people of colour in film, television, music, and literature.
