THE CREATOR and star of E4 comedy Chewing Gum says she is “overwhelmed” at news the series will be renewed for a second series.
“The love and support for my Chewing Gum baby has been overwhelming and I can’t wait to get started on the second series,” the 27-year-old said following the announcement. “All I’ve got to do now is write it.”
The series, adapted from Coel’s award-winning 2012 National Theatre stage play Chewing Gum Dreams, sees the actress transform into 25-year-old Tracey Gordon, a religious Beyoncé-obsessed 24-year-old who is fast discovering sex, friendship and the meaning of life on her council estate.
Rachel Springett, Commissioning Editor for Comedy at Channel 4, said the broadcaster is “thrilled to be working with [Michaela] again on this second series”.
“Michaela is a rare and exceptional talent; it has been inspirational to work with her on her first TV series and to see how incredibly multi-talented and fresh her viewpoint is, it’s extraordinary. We are thrilled to be working with her again on this second series.”
The new season is scheduled to hit our screens next year, though no specific airdate has been confirmed.
